Foreign Minister Winston Peters has questioned the legitimacy of the third independence referendum in New Caledonia linked to the recent riots there.

A group of Kanaks is living in Hawke's Bay saying it is not worth going home due to the conflict and lack of jobs.

"Just as our whakapapa is entwined with the Kanak people so is our Mana Motuhake," Te Pāti Māori says.

Kia Mau has released a statement in solidarity with the Kanaky movement for self-determination in the light of political uprisings in Kanaky/New Caledonia.
