Police cleared for shooting Antony Ratahi

The police officer who shot and killed Antony Ratahi in Taranaki in 2011 has been cleared of any wrongdoing.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) found the officer was justified in shooting Antony Ratahi to protect himself and others.

Ratahi took his former partner Marcelle Beer hostage in Opunake's Headlands Hotel in July 2011 and was shot after a 13-hour standoff with armed police.

In the IPCA report it was stated that police were faced with a dangerous situation and courageously put their own lives at risk to ensure the safety of Beer.
