X-citing win for South Auckland youth, Beau Monga

A "buzzed out" Beau Monga, who affiliates to Ngāpuhi, Ngāiterangi, Ngāti Ranginui, Tūwharetoa, Tainui, Ngāti Whātua, Rarotonga and Tahiti, has had an exciting end to a whirlwind adventure on this year's season of X Factor New Zealand.

Last night in the grand final, the Cook Island Māori youth from Manurewa, was announced the 2015 X Factor winner, pipping Māngere singer Nyssa Collins at the post.

Monga blew away the X Factor judges in the audition rounds with a unique version of "Hit the Road Jack" using a looper machine.

Since qualifying for the show, Monga was the only contestant to have never been eliminated in any heat despite the sudden change of mentors back in March.

His electric performance of Brother Love's "Rūketekete te Mamae" brought another part of Monga's cultural background to the fore.

This, coupled with Nyssa Collins' Samoan version of the Crowded House classic, "Don't Dream It's Over", took Polynesian music to another level on this national stage.

Coming a long way from posting music cover videos on social media, Collins can also stand proud of her achievements.

Today Beau's proud dad, Ryan "Captain Fonk" Monga, explained how it felt hearing the announcement that his son had won the show, explaining, "When they said "Beau", I just burst into tears."

Beau Monga - the singer, rapper, beatboxer, dancer, ukulele player finished last night's show off in true style with his original single, King and Queen, which is available now on iTunes.
