New drink driving laws effective from Dec 1

As of today new drink driving laws are in place, anyone 20 years old or younger can not consume any alcohol if they are going to drive.  Police around the country are encouraging drivers to refrain from driving at all if you're going to consume alcohol.

The two cold ones you may have before driving home could possibly push you over the limit now there are new drink driving laws.

But according to Jo Tipene, the Police have a national campaign of trying to stop people drinking and driving altogether.

Under the new law, anyone over 20 years who wants to drink and drive is not allowed more than 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, but if you're under 20 you are not allowed any alcohol at all in your system when you drive.

Tamati Ngerengere says Māori need to take this new law change seriously otherwise they will be bombarded with penalties.

With summer just around the corner, officials hope to see less drink drivers on the road.
