Boaties urged to stay clear of Rena Exclusion Zone

As the Easter break fast approaches, boaties are being reminded to stay well away from the Rena Exclusion Zone around the Otaiti Reef.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council Regional Harbour Master Peter Buell said even though salvors Resolve Salvage & Fire had left the area, work was still continuing around the wreck.

There have been almost 20 recorded breaches of the exclusion zone since the beginning of this year, and four infringement fines were issued.

The area is, on a daily basis, being closely examined to ensure no boats enter and if anyone is found in the exclusion zone they may be fined.

Harbour patrols will remain vigilant this long weekend as many boats are expected to make the most of the fine weather that is predicted.
