Around 9 thousand residences in Auckland will receive an increase in rates of over $1000.
The Auckland Council will make the rates available on its website, aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/rates from 9am today. Property owners will be prompted to enter their address details where they will find the rates and payment options.
According to the Auckland Council it has written to around 77,000 ratepayers who are likely to see more than a 10 percent increase and has made around 12,000 phone calls to the highest impacted ratepayers.
The Council has estimated that of the 454,000 residential properties around, 79.5 percent will receive an increase under $500 and 7.2 percent will receive an increase between $500 to $1000.
11.3 percent of ratepayers are expected to receive a rates decrease.
According to the Council the rapidly growing population of Auckland, property valuation in the city and transport issues were all considered in the evaluation of the rates.
An interim Transport Levy over the next three years will also be a fixed charge as part of everyone’s rates bill which is expected to raise around $186 million to be used on specific transport projects.
The Auckland Council says “There is a need for investment in the growth of our local communities and the region as a whole making sure this remains an affordable place to live for all Aucklanders.”
The Council is expecting high interest and has asked ratepayers to remain patient and check their rates either tonight or over the next couple of days.
