RNZ axes Māori news show

Radio New Zealand is closing a key Māori programme dedicated to indigenous stories. But RNZ denies its weakening its news coverage of Māori issues.

Te Manu Korihi broadcast Māori news four times each weekday.  Its website says Te Manu Korihi is a feature in its leading news shows. But today, staff let slip on social media that tonight would be its final bulletin.

Head of Content, Carol Hirschfeld, said they would keep the brand of Te Manu Korihi but would extend coverage of Maori and Pacific stories across the network.

She said there would be one job loss but redeployment was an option.
