Kaitaia boxer Mea Motu has made New Zealand boxing history by beating the 14-year record for most held New Zealand titles in women's boxing.

"It feels amazing that I have done it, and I just want to keep going," Motu says.

The 32-year-old won her third New Zealand national title against Ayisha Abied in a PBCNZ featherweight title fight in Auckland on Saturday, breaking former IBF world champion Daniella Smith's long-standing record of two titles in the women's division.

Motu expressed warmth and admiration for her opponent Abied.

"She's very determined. She is a strong, kind, caring person and she really loves the sport. She was the only one that was willing to step up and fight me. She's definitely strong, and she's got talent."

As inspiration for her fight, Motu walked to the ring using a song her cousin made especially for the occasion.

"That's the biggest [thing for me], having family and my fans and support. It means so much, that's what I'm about, and they back me 100%. I really feel that when I'm out there, I really feel the crowd, and it really hits home for me."

Motu says she wants to break Sean Sullivan's record of most New Zealand national titles in boxing, which is seven titles over five different weight divisions.

She is also eager to fight overseas and wants to challenge for world titles.

"I know I'm ready, and I'm ready to go overseas, ready to fight for the titles."
