NZ Fashion Week kicks off on Monday and Māori fashion designer Sharmaine Moke is putting the final touches on her pieces set to be presented at Miromoda's showcase.
Sharmaine is of Ngāi Tahu and Te Arawa descent, and this will be the first time her clothing label GRAY will feature at NZ's pre-eminent fashion event and she hopes to make a lasting impression.
Sharmaine has been designing clothes since she was 20, but now her dream of having her clothing label GRAY on the runway will come true.
“I've gone through Miromoda, which is a competition for Māori designers and given there aren't a lot of Māori designers in the industry anyway it’s a great way to promote themselves,” says Sharmaine.
She's one of 16 Māori designers in the Miromoda Fashion Show that will be showcasing their looks at NZ Fashion Week.
Sharmaine says, “I looked at urban Māori, mainly the corporate sector of urban Māori, so I've used a lot of grey, black and white.”
Sharmaine says her collection is a mix of urban and comfort.
“I think you're gonna see it alot more edgier, as well as feminine but it’s also gonna be pieces you can mix and match,” says Sharmaine.
Sharmaine's collection "Concrete Jungle" hits the runway next week at NZ Fashion Week.
