Hawke's Bay bodybuilder ironed up for Mr Universe title

Hawke's Bay bodybuilder Aaron Vaisigano will represent New Zealand at the Mr Universe competition after taking the Mr New Zealand Physique title at the National Amateur Body Building Association Championships.

Vaisigano says, “I had my fingers crossed and everything and I said please God let it be me, and they said number 136 Aaron Vaisigano and my knees buckled and I couldn't move.  I was so happy and just so overwhelmed.”

At the age of 15, pursuing basketball was a difficult task due to his lack of height.  He then decided to take up weights for strengthening and discovered a whole new world in bodybuilding.

“Once I grabbed the iron that was it, I knew it was for me and I haven't looked back since,” he explained.

He lost his motivation in 2007 and gained 50kg when his younger brother drowned.  But he's overcome his grief and will carry his younger brother's memory with him overseas to the Mr Universe competition in the Philippines next month.

“I'll dedicate this to him, and I wish he was here, but yeah I'll just use it as strength and motivation from now until the 14th November,” said Vaisigano.

So far this year, he has won four competitions and is gunning for a fifth win at Mr Universe.
