Native Affairs – Detained Downunder

Riots have broken out in the remote Australian Detention Centre on Christmas Island, where around 90 Kiwi detainees are being held.

The death of a detained asylum seeker is said to have led to the outbreak early this morning.

Under what is called Section 501 in Australian Migration Law, more than 200 Kiwis now call a detention centre like Christmas Island home, for how long?  No one knows.

For many inside, it's not God, or their iwi they're turning to for help, but a primary school teacher from Adelaide.

Erina Morunga's been fighting for Kiwis' rights in Australia for the past two and a half years, and is now stepping up her campaign.

Native Affairs met up with Erina, on her quest to help hundreds of Kiwi detainees.
