Enhancing moko kauae with a masculine touch

A Northland man caused quite a stir for standing by his decision to wear a moko kauae, traditionally worn by women.  Now Vincent Nathan has opted for a full face moko, worn by men. So why the change?

Fast forward to 11 months later and a new Vincent Nathan is wearing a moko traditionally worn by men.

“Why the change? I think it was going to be a natural progression having worn moko kauae for so long, that journey has led me to the beginning of this journey” says moko enthusiast, Vincent Nathan.

Te Kāea followed Mr Nathan after hearing about his remarkable story of wearing a moko kauae, which is traditionally worn by women. Just recently he decided to enhance his moko with a masculine touch.

For Mr Nathan is was a chance to embody the feminine and the masculine elements “Bringing together wahine and the tāne into one and that's a beautiful thing.”

“It's a journey of inspiration, I wear moko on my face to inspire others to wear moko” says Mr Nathan.
