The end of the national meeting saw a working group established to undertake consultation regarding a new structure for the National trust.
It will be comprised of seven members, one representing King Tūheitia, the national trust, the iwi leaders forum and four representing the kōhanga reo. The majority of kōhanga regions did not support the four models put forward for deliberation by the trust.
One member who will vacate their position immediately is Tukoroirangi Morgan, the representative for Kingi Tūheitia.
It's said some kōhanga aired some concerns regarding his appointment to the board at a time when those processes were being decided on, as well as him facilitating the meeting while holding that position.
The National trust said it spent the last five years assessing change to the governance structure but says its Treaty of Waitangi claim and the problems with its qualification, Te Takaimatua, resulted in a delay. They also say because of legal issues they weren't able to settle quickly the recent turmoil.
Over the coming months the working party will commence consultation and in December another national meeting will be held to establish a new structure.
