Hamilton schools on high Measles alert

Hamilton has been on high alert in recent weeks following cases of measles within local high schools.  The debate on whether parents should have their children immunised has risen again, with a total of 53 confirmed measles cases being reported in the area.

Hamilton high schools, intermediates, primary schools and childcare centres have sent out information to parents about being aware of symptoms, and checking their children's immunity status.

While it is known that measles can be a very serious illness, and that it can be easily spread from one person to another, few know that immunisation is the only way to prevent measles.

Our reporter Heeni Brown has more information on this story at 5:30pm on Te Kāea.  If you suspect someone in your home has the measles, you should contact your doctor or medical centre prior to visiting.
