Rotorua residents feel effects of flash flooding

One person has been hurt after flash flooding in Rotorua today, causing power cuts and road closures.

Some road within the district now look like rivers, bringing traffic to a stand-still.

The Met Service issued a rain warning yesterday and it hit the town early this morning causing damage around the city.

Mel Wriggles of STMS Traffic Management says, “We were called out this morning to do this plus a couple of other sites that we still got to get too. I think the rain last night has really blocked everything.”

Residents were surprised this morning at the amount of rain fall. Warnings are still in place in town, with five major road closures today.

According to Rotorua resident, Bruce Hayman says, “This is the first time I have ever seen this and it's come up real bad.”

One resident on Sunset road says surface flooding always happens in his area but not to this extent.

“My mum left here at 6 o'clock this morning and it was fine there was nothing, she just drove straight out and when I got up about 7, 8.  I thought (woah!) bit of a flood there,” says Antony Ngawhika.

The rain is expected to hit the East Coast tonight.
