A review of Māori Commercial Fisheries Structures was that Te Ohu Kaimoana (TOKM), the body charged with distributing fisheries assets to iwi be disestablished.
With most of the organisation's work now completed, the review says iwi should decide what the future holds for Te Ohu Kaimoana.
Since 2005, TOKM has transferred fisheries assets worth $543 million to iwi.
According to Chairman Matiu Rei, “I'm worried because I still think TOKM have a lot more work to do.”
Ngahiwi Tomoana agrees, TOKM should remain, however some of the remaining assets should be returned to iwi. He also admits some iwi may not be able to manage those assets well.
In the coming weeks, meetings will be held with iwi around the country to discuss these recommendations.
In June, iwi will decide whether Te Ohu Kaimoana will sink or swim.
