The call of the Kiwi is being heard more and more in the 7.5 thousand hectare forest of Omataroa near Te Teko.
It's thanks to an an iwi-driven conservation project that started releasing Kiwi chicks back into the wild eight years ago. The Māori forest owners - the Omataroa Rangitaiki No 2 Trust - now have 40 kiwi living in the forest.
But as Iulia Leilua reports, predators make it a struggle for them to survive without their iwi kaitiaki.
