The Queen's Birthday Honours are awarded annually and recognise the efforts, achievements and excellence of people who have worked tirelessly in their various communities and nationally for the betterment of all New Zealanders.
Amongst them were a number of Māori recipients.
New dame, Dame Justice Lowell-Goddard is believed to be the first Māori woman appointed to the High Court.
Three other recipients were awarded the Companion of the NZ Order of Merit, Professor Jonathan Mane-Wheoki for his contributions as an art historian, Cultural Historian and Curator Professor Matua Hingangaroa Smith and Dr Huirangi Waikerepuru who have both played a significant role in language revitalisation.
Iwi and hapū leadership was also recognised. Awarded the Officer of the NZ Order of Merit was Riki Herengitana-Cherrington who helped establish Murihiku Marae in the South, Rangitane Marsden who was a chief negotiator for the Ngāi Takoto Treaty settlement and Haami Piripi who has held significant leadership roles for Te Taura Whiri and as chair of Te Rarawa.
Health and hauora champions were honoured in recognising the contributions of Miri Hawiki, Dr Tony Ruakere and Heather Te Au Skipworth (QSM).
