The Coroner has released his report in to the deaths of 20-year-old Casey Missy Turama Nathan and her newborn son Kymani, who both died in Waikato Hospital in May 2012.
Coroner Garry Evans found that a midwife had several opportunities to make decisions that could have given a mother and son a better chance of survival.
Three of those recommendations have been made out to the Minister of Health, Dr Jonathan Coleman where:
- 1st year graduate midwives should work for a time in a supported environment.
- Midwives should be the subject of "significant post-graduate monitoring, supervision and education updates."
- Midwives should not be permitted immediately upon graduation and registration with the Midwifery Council to provide lead community care to Women.
Recommendations have been given to several midwifery governing bodies and it is yet to be determined whether or not they will take them on board.
