Sir Paul Holmes

Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae knighted Holmes, one of seven to receive the Knights Companion on the recent New Year's Honours List.

Mateparae honoured Holmes for excellence in broadcasting and for helping his community.  Holmes earned international notoriety after referring to former UN secretary-general, Kofi Annan, as a "cheeky darkie", and writing an editorial last year about the Treaty of Waitangi where he described Waitangi Day as a day of hatred, rudeness and violence.
